Joni Mitchell's first public performance after recovering from her brain aneurysm was a surprise appearance at the Newport Folk Festival on July 24, 2022. She joined fellow musician Brandi Carlile onstage and sang several of her classic songs, including "A Case of You," "Both Sides Now," and "Big Yellow Taxi." This marked her first full live set in 20 years and her first public performance since 2015.

While this was her first public performance, it's important to note that Mitchell had been hosting informal gatherings of musicians at her home during her recovery, which she called "Joni Jams." So, although the Newport Folk Festival performance was her public comeback, she had been practicing and playing music with others prior to that.
