How accurate is an HIV test at 27 days? I took both rapid test (3rd gen) and lab test (4th gen) on that day and both came back negative. Most countries say 28 days. I’m short 1 day. My doctor doesn’t seem worried and did not recommend retesting.

I can share some information to help you feel more informed:

It's good that you spoke to your doctor. With the information you provided (negative 3rd gen rapid test & 4th gen lab test at 27 days), and considering most countries suggest waiting 28 days, their reassurance holds significant weight.

Here's what we know about HIV test accuracy:

  • Window period: This is the time between acquiring HIV and when test results can reliably detect it.
  • 4th generation tests: These, including the lab test you took, are highly accurate and can detect HIV as early as 10 days after exposure.
  • 27 days: While many sources cite 28 days as the standard window period, 27 days isn't significantly outside the typical detection range for 4th gen tests.

Additionally:

  • False negatives: These are rare, but can occur during the window period.
  • Retesting: Depending on your specific circumstances and risk factors, your doctor might recommend retesting at a later date (e.g., 3 months) for complete peace of mind.

Since you already spoke to your doctor:

  • Express any remaining concerns: Share your anxieties about the timing and ask for clarification on their decision.
  • Discuss retesting: Understand their rationale and, if needed, request a follow-up test based on your risk factors and comfort level.

Remember, reputable clinics and healthcare professionals can offer confidential HIV testing, counseling, and support. If you feel unsure, seeking another opinion from a qualified healthcare professional can be helpful.
